I know a copywriter who has built himself an email list of 8,000+ subscribers. He makes over $2m of revenue per year from his list by selling his copywriting services and products. I've worked with several clients in the past whom all had seemingly small email lists, but made big sales every year. It still fascinates me. We tend to think that we need big numbers to succeed. That it's all a numbers game. As a creator, you learn to build a brand with a nice following on social media. Rules and the different algorithms are your masters there. Occasionally, you plug your newsletter opt-in page under your posts. I did exactly that since starting my newsletter in June. This list has 90 subscribers now. That's slow, but still faster than most email lists grow. My point here is: most creators, writers and digital entrepreneurs struggle to build their email lists. But what's worse, most of their subscribers are not responsive to their content, nor will they buy anything from them. The result: they quit. Sure, you can play the social media games for years, and build a "big-number list" how I like to call it. Only to realize that you don't know anything about your people. That's the numbers game. Dan Koe's list is so big, it doesn't matter what he launches and creates, the big number alone makes him a decent income. But how come my friend from the beginning of this story makes so much money with a relatively small list? It's simple: he gets the right people to subscribe, learns about them, nurtures them, and finally provides them with exactly what they need to solve their problems—at exactly the right time. That's the kind of list I want to build. It's faster, there is no luck involved, and I can control it 100%. The best way to your 1,000 True Fans, like Kevin Kelly described it. What kind of list do you want to build? I decided to rebrand my personal brand. "Do What You Want" is still a desirable end goal. But the tools to get there are much more interesting. I like to look at the creator business model from an email list's perspective. Your email list is the asset you can control. Creating, building and helping others takes a whole new meaning when you are the boss, not the newest algorithm changes. Sure, we will still need to create and connect on the big platforms. It's just where people gather online—and this won't change soon. But what if you can create with the only purpose to get new subscribers to your list, instead of going viral and chasing people who won't follow you anyway? Introducing: The Email Creator. This newsletter will now be delivered daily on weekdays, starting today. Here's what you can expect:
You see, we will be more on the email-side of things. But it's all about business building, after all. I want to help you build a business that runs your life, not the other way around. Because that's what I do. Your list building, newsletter and email setup are the surefire way to get there. Sure, I don't have a 100,000 subscriber list. But I have the experience from countless projects with former web development clients. And yes, they all had their own email lists. It was their main source of income, not their LinkedIn profiles. Together, we will find out what works, and what doesn't. And I will make sure to bring my experience to the table, for your benefit only. Sounds cool? I would love to have you on this new journey! Please hit reply if you want to tell me what you think. Tomorrow we'll look into my new strategy of daily (on weekdays) newsletters. Why do I start this? And how can you do it too? See you tomorrow! —Wolfgang |
